The enduring notion in some areas of the recruitment industry that it’s good business to treat contract-based employees as commodities has always been a problem for me. Actually, it’s not really a problem. I think it’s absurd, and it stands in stark contrast to the importance and incalculable value of diversity in employment today.
As I continue to focus on increasing and improving diversity and inclusion in the technology industry, I have also been thinking about commoditization as well. When commodity thinking drives recruitment, people are no longer individuals to a business. The diversity of each individual (be it race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability and/or cultural heritage) is not considered, and therefore, not valued.
